Diabetes Epidemic - Module #3

Untold Truth Seminar Module 3 - The Diabetes Epidemic: Our Deadly Fascination with Junk Food

Diabetes statistics for the U.S.: Affects 18 million Americans Many are children or young adults. Six million are unaware they have diabetes. 800,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. 33% of today's children will become diabetic. Seventh leading killer in the U.S.

What is Diabetes? Gestational Diabetes Occurs in expectant mothers, usually goes away after baby's birth. Type I Afflicts one million people in the U.S. Caused by the pancreas's inability to produce or properly use insulin. Insulin converts sugar into energy. Type I diabetics require insulin injections to stabilize blood sugar. Type II 95% of diabetics have this variety. Previously known as "adult onset" diabetes Name changed because younger and younger people are now getting the disease Type II sufferers also struggle with insulin Pancreas may not produce enough Cells may have become "insulin resistant" The majority of type II diabetes is linked to diet and lifestyle.

What goes wrong with diabetes? Food is digested Glucose is released Pancreas releases insulin Cells receive energy WHAT GOES WRONG: faulty insulin receptors o0r insulin not working right; prevents the cell membrane from opening to receive the glucose it needs.

How Bad Is It?

Type II Diabetes is the fastest growing disease in America today The average American today eats 530 calories more than he did in 1970. (see chart, p. 7) Consumed per year: 60# cookies and cake 23 gallons of ice cream 7# potato chips (has to be more than that!!) 51# french fries 57 gallons soda pop

Older generation – did they grow up on that kind of food? No. Even ice cream you had just once in a while, and it was made at home with stuff that resembled food. (Did you know that out-of-date ice cream, twinkies, etc. goes to pigs to fatten them up. One class member told us about what wonderful health her grandmother is in; 92 yrs. of age who has never eaten processed foods, and is bright and active and even matches her shoes and purse!

We don't need every new diet fad that comes around --- even the "eat right for your blood type"! We just need to eat moderately!!!

Signs you may have diabetes: increased/frequent urination dehydration excessive intake of water and/or food weight loss despite increased appetite nausea and/or vomiting abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly after eating weakness or excessive fatigue absence of menstruation in women blurred or poor vision increased susceptibility to infection and/or poor would healing Impotence in men

Risk factors: Family history of diabetes Over 40 Pear shaped vs. apple shaped body Waist over 35" (women) or 40" (men) Sedentary lifestyle; high-fat, high-calorie diet High blood pressure Women – history of gestational diabetes or PCOS African American, Hispanic American or Native American descendent History of kidney and/or gall bladder stones

R – Rest – take time for a rest when you are tired and worn out; get enough sleep at night (it may mean giving up something that is not as important, like TV, internet, e-mail, etc.). Make Sundays a day of rest! T – Trust in God – there are many burdens in your life that you were not meant to hold on to and deal with by yourself. Be anxious for nothing, etc. (verses)

UNTOLD TRUTH #1: WE ARE OVERWHELMED AND UNDERMINED BY TOO MUCH SUGAR

What's so bad about too much sugar? "An acidic diet (high sugar, meat, soda pop) causes calcium to go from the bones to the pancreas. This not only triggers osteoporosis, but also jams up the pancreas, which produces less insulin as a result." (Journal of American Medicine) (Jammed in kidneys, gall bladder, bone spurs, breast calcifications, etc.)

How Much Sugar Do We Eat? A century ago, the average adult consumed 18 pounds of sugar per year. Today, annual average sugar consumption in the United States is a staggering 176 pounds per person. This is nearly 1000% more sugar than 100 years ago.

Biggest weight loss secret of the century – get rid of the sugar out of your house! If it there – you will eat it!

Is sugar the only problem? If you reduce sugar intake but continue to eat white bread, rice and pasta in large amounts, those carbohydrate-dense foods will mimic straight sugar. Whole grains much better – B vitamins, fiber – but The wrong kinds of fats are a danger too. Obesity is directly linked to diabetes development.
