Digestive Bitters

I am wondering about Digestive Bitters. NSP's information says it is a tonic which implies to me that it isn't to be used for a specific condition, just for overall digestive health. In that case should anyone use it? Or is it helpful for a specific health condition also? I would be interested to hear any testimonials about using it for a specific problem, if there are any.

Herbs that can build the energy of the organ systems are called "Tonics" or herbs used for tonification. Tonic herbs are used to counteract a deficiency or shortage of the body. Read "The Way of Herbs" by Michael Tierra There are Yin and Yang Tonic herbs. -Suzanne

Here's some information from the HART Toolkit...
"Digestive Bitters Tonic contains a blend of bitter herbs that help improve digestion and enable the body to better absorb nutrients from food eaten.... Bitter herbs have been used for centuries for various mild to moderate digestive problems such as loss of appetite, colic, constipation, flatulence, heartburn, indigestion and gallbladder and liver stagnation." Q: I have some questions regarding Digestive Bitters. Are they a substitute for food enzymes? Do they stimulate Food Enzymes? It says they stimulate digestive fluids. Well, I'm not sure what that means. Any information about them will be appreciated. Like, when would you use them instead of Food Enzymes and why. Any success stories would be very helpful also. Thank you. Blessings. -Kathy MacLaren

Bitters activate the digestive juices. They increase digestive function in the stomach, small intestines, and pancreas. They aid the function of the liver and bowels as well. I would try this in combination with or instead of PDA. Take me for example, I don't test good at all on PDA but I can always benefit from improving digestion as I had problems with this before I began using herbs. I had an underactive or under-acid stomach, I didn't produce enough juices for proper digestion. I remedied this with Safflowers and lemon water. Of course, avoiding soda and coffee goes along with it. Also it's always taught to avoid drinking fluids with meals but actually room temperature fluids (such as water) taken with meals act to stimulate gastric secretion in the stomach, promote enzymes and bicarbonate secretion in the small intestines. -Chottsie

In last years telephone Coaching course Dr. Segelman suggested that Digestive Bitters be used every spring to "houseclean" the digestive system from all the indoor activities of winter.

He also suggested that Digestive Bitters are good for gastro-esophageal reflux disease and that this product should be added to the Digestive System Charts in the Opportunity Kit under the Over-acid/irritated side, first column on the left under Acid Indigestion. -Marilyn Navarro

I recommend Digestive Bitters, especially when there may be liver or gallbladder issues. Digestive Bitters stimulate the digestive secretions, and also is good for clearing the liver and bile in the gallbladder. If you think of it we recommend bitters all the time for liver and gallbladder problems.

Dandelion for example. In many cultures around the world it is tradition to eat bitters before big meals. In the US we have lost are taste for bitters, probably why we have so many digestive problems. Gallbladder surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed. -Wild Mountain Herbs

I've have used the Digestive Bitters on my son for "failure to thrive." He has extensive food allergies. This has helped him with food digestion and his nature did improve. I also have a client who used it. He has fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. He muscle tested for it and he said it improved how he felt during the day and got more energy. I look at this combination as a tonic that helps those who are chronically run down. But I am sure there are other great uses. -Teresa Gibson
