Eye - Macular Degeneration

My mother has macular degeneration (the wet form)and her eyes are getting worse. I would like to know if anyone has a suggestion that can help her. I was wondering about Colloidal Silver? Thanks. -Tracy L. Freeman C.H.

Check out the product called "Perfect Eyes", which used to be called "Eyebright Plus". Perfect Eyes contains Lutein, Lycopene, Zeaxanthin, Cryptoxanthin, Bilberry, N-Acetyl-Cysteine, Bilberry, Eyebright herb, Alpha and Beta Carotenes, Curcuminoids powder extract, Zinc Gluconate, Selenium, Taurine, Quercitin, and Hesperidin.

Perfect Eyes and several of its ingredients are called out specifically for macular degeneration in the HART on CD software (Bilberry, Lutein, Zinc, and Carotenoid Blend, which contains Alpha carotene, Beta-Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein, Zeaxanthin).

If you don't have this software, I'd suggest you call Laura at 800-358-4278 and tell her Julie Phillips says it is the best tool in town (any town). They are worth their weight in gold - hats off to Laura and Russ who author the HART tools and serve as one of our NSP Forum sponsors!

I agree with the Perfect Eyes formula as a very good one to consider using for your mom. Because if it being the "wet type" I would add some extra bilberry NSP has "Bilberry Fruit Concentrate"

Definitely worth giving it a try for at least 8-12 weeks just to see what developments occur. I think there will be some improvement. -Lourdes Martinez
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Q: What would you suggest for macular degeneration in its last stages?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
#1 N-Acetyl Cysteine (or Milk Thistle Combo)
#2 Remove mercury (if any metal dental work) - the eye is nervous tissue and mercury builds up here and causes damage!!
#3 Wood Betony & EW internally (6-8 of each daily)
#4 Capsicum extract & Vitamin E externally (forehead / temples / bridge of nose / 2-3x daily) -Miss Sunshine

My mother has macular degeneration. She also has just one eye, so I researched carefully before we began a program. The Perfect Eyes with Lutein is wonderful, Added Zinc is a must. When she saw her specialist after two months he said that her vision had improved tremendously and asked what she was doing. She told him and he said 'well keep it up' and he asked her for information on the products. -Gail Pfaff

My girlfriends mother uses Perfect Eyes for her macular degeneration. She went from 20/2000 to 20/200. Her doc told her to keep taking it. -Buch
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Yes, I have a lady who had it. Someone suggested it to her. I don't even remember how she found me, but she won't take anything else - and her eyes started getting much better within about two months I think. The lady has been taking it for quite some time now and her eye doctor told her to keep it up. -Georgiana
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I had a customer who had irititis - a serious inflammation of the iris - that decided she was going to stop all the medication the ophthalmologist gave her and take herbs alone. (made me nervous, but entirely her choice)
I suggested Perfect Eyes and EW both internally and as an eyewash. I don't remember quantities, but probably at least bottle recommendations. She called me back a week or so later and said she had been back to the ophthalmologist and her eyes were much improved! Her pressures were normal again (irititis can cause a dangerous increase causing glaucoma) and the inflammation was way down. She was thrilled and I was too!

With the damage done already, it will probably take quite a while to see significant changes, but keep taking both of them as well as using EW as an eyewash and I think you'll notice changes over time.

On a personal note, I am VERY nearsighted and have been taking Eyebright + for a couple of months. Had my eyes examined this week and instead of getting worse (like they have slowly been doing for years); they actually improved SLIGHTLY. I will continue to take it faithfully! -Ellen

Q: I would like to know what's working for macular degeneration. My client is 65 whose vision has deteriorated for the past ten years. She wants to work on this but expense is a consideration. I did search the forum, archives and all, but couldn't find anything on this. Thanks so much for your help. -Patricia Parler
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Macular degeneration is ultimately related to damage caused by free radicals. It is the leading cause of blindness in persons over 55. As with so many problems, it is easy to prevent than repair. She should at least be able to prevent it from progressing. Eyebright Plus is a good choice. She may also want to try ginkgo biloba. It is also important that she eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. She should be sure to eat/take plenty of Antioxidants and adequate Zinc. -Teresa Cantrell
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I would strongly recommend that you add our Super Antioxidants since this IS definitely free radical damage and it is a power packed supplement with all of the free radical fighters in it. I personally don't think anyone should leave it out of their herbal program, EVER. -Nolee
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
My oldest client is 96. The Eyebright Plus stopped her macular degeneration. Her Optometrist was amazed, he had been treating her for 10 years with no major success. He had her on a similar product with Lutein, but the quality wasn't there. This lady is as sharp as a tack, she started taking herbs in her 40's. When she shows up at a Herbal Hour she will ask more question than anyone. But I don't mind because she is living proof of what herbs will do. She now is traveling between children, and feeling even better since I completely switched her to quality NSP products. Morinda will help also. It is one of my choice as an all around good herb to add to almost any problem. -Jim Bledsoe

I have a friend that stopped her macular degeneration with Eyebright Plus and Bilberry. She took 2 3x a day of each of them and to continues to take that much, she has tried reducing the dosage but when she does the bleeding in her eyes starts again. But she feels that is a small price to pay for keeping her eyesight. When she first started she had scarring and bleeding in the eyes, but when she went back to the doctors in about 6 months, he could not even find evidence of the scars. She has been symptom free for about 1 1/2 years now. P.S. This gal is a young 70. -Debbie

One of my customers recently sent me a summary of research done on nutritional supplementation for macular degeneration. The article mentioned that the most important nutritional factors according to seem to be antioxidants. Some specific nutritional substances mentioned, all of which NSP carries, include Beta Carotene, Vitamins A, C and E, and Enzymes. -Mashubi Rochell

Q: I have a question regarding macular degeneration. In a 75 y/o person, if the vision has already deteriorated to peripheral vision only, what is the chance of vision being restored, even partially? -Debby H.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
From what I have heard, there's not much you can do to reverse it, only slow the deterioration process. Even the people we have on Eyebright Plus say it has stopped or severely slowed the process, however it does not reverse it. But maybe there is something else... -Glen Byler
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
To add to this testimony, my mother's gentleman friend has been on Perfect Eyesfor just 2 weeks and already is improving. He was to have surgery to remove scar tissue from all the laser surgery he's had for eye problems due to diabetes. Now they aren't recommending surgery since his eyes are improving. -Chottsie

There are two types of macular degeneration, according to one of my clients. Dry and wet degeneration. Would there be a difference in the herbs one would take? I have all the back messages on this topic. -Debby H.

Macular degeneration is a common cause of age-related blindness. Several natural remedies are under investigation for treating or preventing macular degeneration. Antioxidants, carotenes, and flavonoids are getting a great deal of attention from researchers in this field. Types of Problems: The lens of the eye focuses an image of the world on a portion of the retina called the macula, the area of finest visual perception. Gradual deterioration of the macula is called macular degeneration and can be brought on by smoking, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and other factors associated with aging. Bright light might also play a role by creating damaging natural substances in the eye called free radicals. In the most common form of macular degeneration, a substance accumulates in the lining of the retina. No conventional medical treatment is available for this disease, although mainstream researchers are seriously investigating antioxidants. The natural treatments mentioned here might be useful for this type of macular degeneration. A much less common form of macular degeneration involves the abnormal growth of blood vessels. This can be treated very successfully, if attended to soon enough, but might lead to irreversible blindness if left untreated. For this reason, medical consultation in all cases of macular degeneration (or any other type of vision loss) is essential.

Study Results
An observational study of more than 2,000 subjects found that Vitamin C supplementation was associated with a decreased incidence of early age-related macular degeneration. Another observational study found that high intake of Vitamin C or Vitamin E was associated with less macular degeneration. However, this type of study can't prove that taking vitamin C or vitamin E supplements will prevent macular degeneration. Double-blind studies are needed.

An 18-month double-blind trial found that a daily supplement containing Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Beta Carotene stopped progression of macular degeneration.
Promising Substances
Various dietary carotenes might also be associated with a lower incidence of macular degeneration.

Carotenes (Carotenoids) are a group of substances found in yellow-orange and dark-green fruits and vegetables. While beta carotene is the most famous carotene, the less well-known carotenes lutein and zeaxanthin might be more closely correlated with protection against macular degeneration. It has been suggested that

Lutein might protect the macula from light-induced damage by dying it yellow, perhaps imitating the action of sunglasses. It also acts in the usual antioxidant fashion by neutralizing free radicals.

Lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, might also be helpful.

Flavonoids are another group of naturally occurring chemicals found in many plants that might offer a variety of beneficial effects. Many flavonoids are antioxidants. Weak but interesting evidence suggests that the flavonoid-rich herbs Bilberry, Ginkgo, and OPCs (Pycnogenols or GRAPINE) might prevent or treat macular degeneration. Moderate wine consumption has been linked to decreased macular degeneration, possibly due to its high levels of flavonoids. Finally, the mineral

Zinc might also help prevent macular degeneration, but study results are a bit contradictory and more work needs to be done before recommendations about Zinc can be made. -Sammye Lamb

A friend of mine totally stopped macular degeneration and even reversed some of the effects by taking 6 a day of each of the Bilberry and the Eyebright Plus for about six months. The bleeding stopped and there is no scarring caused by the bleeding her doctor was amazed. She continues to take 4-5 of each a day because when she cut back to the dosage recommended on the bottle the bleeding started again. But as far as I am concern that is a small price to pay for having your eye sight. She did lose most of the sight in one eye before getting on the herbs. The Dr. had told her there was NO TREATMENT for her condition. Well she showed him. -Debbie Krieter

Macular Degeneration

MYTHS:
Everyone with macular degeneration is going to continue losing vision, and there is no effective treatment to avoid this.

FACTS:
You do not have to lose your vision with macular degeneration. There are steps you can take to stabilize and even possibly improve your vision.

OVERVIEW:
Macular Degeneration (ARMD-Aged Related Macular Degeneration) is the slow deterioration of the cells in the macula, a tiny yellowish area near the center of the retina where vision is the most precise. This deterioration therefore affects your central vision, the very vision you use for reading, writing, driving and recognizing faces. ARMD causes the loss of central vision. Your peripheral vision is not affected.

There are two types of macular degeneration: Ninety percent of people with macular degeneration have the dry type, in which small, yellow spots called drusens form underneath the macular. Drusens are believed to be waste products that accumulate because of lack of antioxidants to clear the waste from the eyes The drusen slowly break down the cells in the macular, causing distorted vision. Dry macular degeneration can progress to the second, more severe type, called wet macular degeneration.

In the wet type, new, abnormal blood vessels begin to grow toward the macular, causing rapid and severe vision loss.

SYMPTOMS:
*Straight lines look wavy
*Distinct shapes are blurry
*Colors look dim
*Words appear blurred or difficult to read
*Dark or blank areas block the center of your vision
*There appears to be a fog in the center of your vision

CAUSES:
*Free radicals damage from ultraviolet and blue light from sunlight passing through he crystalline lens. Free radicals are also natural byproducts of metabolism. These highly reactive chemicals cause oxidation, and can destabilize healthy cells in the back of the eyes. Free radical damage is accelerated by smoking, chronic fatigue and compromised immune systems.

*Nutritional Deficiencies and Poor Digestion - Often sufferers of macular degeneration are deficient in some or many of the important nutrients including essential fatty acids, lutein, antioxidants, bioflavenoids, zinc, selenium, vitamin B-Complex.

HEREDITY
Individuals at risk for macular degeneration include:
*Women
*Smokers - increase their risk by 200-300 percent
*Adult diabetics
*People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
*Those lacking sufficient ability to absorb nutrients through their digestive tracts
*Those with a family history of macular degeneration
*Drugs that can damage the retina: (see "Drugs That Harm the Eyes" for a more complete list of harmful drugs:)
*Plaquenil (hydroxchloriquine sulfate) is a drug routinely prescribed by rheumatologists for rheumatoid arthritis. It has caused irreversible retinal damage.
*Chloridine (brand name catapres) is used to lower blood pressure
*The whole family of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can cause visual side effects such as cataracts, dry eyes, and retinal hemorrhages that may result from long-term use. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Bayer, Aleve), flurbiprofen, ketoprofen and naproxen sodium. Also Tylenol (acetaminophen), though not an NSAID, can be harmful.

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT:
At the present, there is no effective treatment. Some causes of macular degeneration are treated with laser surgery, but the treatment itself may not effectively seal up a leaky blood vessel without at the same time permanently destroying retinal nerve fibers that pass through the area. According to the National Eye Institute, laser treatment can actually worsen vision, and any ability to slow the progression of disease does not appear until at least a year after surgery.

On April 12th, 2000 , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Visudyne Therapy to be used on a trial basis for treatment of wet macular degeneration. This procedure has been shown on a trial basis to be less damaging than laser treatments in its ability to target abnormal blood vessels, and avoid damaging retinal cells. Only patients who are currently enrolled in clinical trials sponsored by QLT and CIBA Vision are eligible for treatment at this time. Patients and practitioners seeking additional information may view the web site at www.Visudyne.com, call the patient/practitioner hotline In North America, 1-800-821-2450, or visit www.photodynamic.net for practitioners who use this therapy near you..

As always, prevention is the best medicine. Using complementary medicine to try to address the underlying cause of macular degeneration, along with traditional medicine to try to prevent damage on an acute basis, is the best approach to preserving vision both short and long-term. Since less than one-percent of those with macular degeneration have progressed to the point of legal blindness, most are in a position to benefit greatly from prevention.

COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENTS FROM NSP:

*Perfect Eyes
*Lutein (Lutein serves as a potent free radical scavenger for the retina)
* Vitamin E and Essential Fatty Acids for circulation
* Grapine contains a powerful antioxidant called proanthocyanidin that is many times stronger as a free radical scavenger than even vitamin E and vitamin C. It strengthens capillaries, arteries and veins, improves circulation, reduces capillary fragility and nerve damage in the eye.
*Bilberry (which is also in Perfect Eyes)improves circulation in the blood vessels of the eye, helps maintain the integrity of capillaries, stabilizes collagen, and stimulates the production of rhodopsin essential for night vision.
* VariGone to improve the overall tone and strength of veins and capillaries, maintain healthy vein constriction and dilation, descrease vascular permeability, promote blood flow. The ingredients in VariGone maximize vascular integrity.
* Flax Seed Oil was suggested by Dr. Hatch of Surprise, AZ to help draw toxic accumulations out the eye and lubricate the eye.
* Vitamin C Timed Release. Vitamin C helps make collagen which strengthens the capillaries that nourish the retina, protects against UV light and is a powerful antioxidant. The eye contains the second highest concentration of vitamin C in the body next to the adrenal glands.
* You also want to cleanse and support the Liver, which in Chinese medicine is responsible for the health of the eyes.
* GreenZone is an excellent, natural dietary powdered formula containing organic grasses, algae, herbs and other nutrients. The link between maintaining healthy vision and a healthy diet, which specifically includes 3-5 servings of vegetables a day, has been established. For those individuals who do not meet this daily requirement, this is an excellent formula for providing essential nutrients and enzymes needed by the body for proper functioning.
* Zinc may be helpful in protecting against vision loss due to macular degeneration. It is found in high concentrations in the eye, and helps bind the protective layer of the retina to the underlying tissue. We recommend up to 30 mg daily.

SELF HELP:

Since we consider most eye conditions to be a reflection of the health of the whole body, lifestyle choices and diet can play a major factor in getting and maintaining good vision. Besides supplements, below are some recommendations:

* Reduce or eliminate drinking caffeine and sodas, avoid aspartame (labeled diet foods)and man made fats (corn oil and safflower oil, trans fats and hydrogenated vegetable oils including canola oil, and especially margarines).

* Eliminate deep fat fried foods, monosodium glutanate (MSG) used as a flavor enhancer which is a potential retinal toxin (Inv Oph 1996; 37: 1618-24), and fat blockers like Olestra which impair the absorption of carotenoids (Argus, August 1996;19:18:July 1996;19:22). Eating greater amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol appear to increase the risk of AMD.

* Limit your alcohol consumption to 1 glass of red wine at night. Alcohol interferes with liver functions, reducing protective glutathione levels (Alcohol 1993;10;469-75).

* Eliminate smoking. Smoking among other things produces cyanide, a retinal toxin.

* Supplement your diet with a good multivitamin like Super Supplemental Vitamins and minerals like Colloidal Minerals or Chinese Mineral Chi.

* Limit the amount of medications (both prescription and non-prescription as much as possible. Make sure to work closely with your health practitioner

* Exercise daily - do at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise daily. Walking and swimming are two excellent forms of exercise.

* Managing your emotional health is very important in maintaining physical health. Fear (fear of failure, responsibility, of being alone, of death, etc.) is at the root of many of life's problems, and is a major factor in many diseases. Take up the practice of meditation, yoga, tai chi, walks in the woods or prayer on a daily basis. -Georgiana

MACULAR DEGENERATION/Article
[Editorial Comments by Georgiana Duncan are in brackets.]

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION
Source: Health Sciences Institute e-Alert

More than 8 million Americans over the age of 55 are at high risk of developing AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration). That's why the 2001 breakthrough study was so significant; it provided very strong evidence to the effectiveness of an easy, inexpensive, and completely natural way to dramatically reduce AMD risk.

It was refreshing to see the mainstream catching up with a protocol that complementary and alternative practitioners had been recommending for years. And now the mainstream has gone a step further with a new study that validates the 2001 research and puts its importance in clear perspective.

In short, this is information everyone over the age of 55 needs to be aware of.

To understand the results of the new research, we'll start with a quick review of the 2001 report from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS); a major, ongoing clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute, one of the federal government's National Institutes of Health.

Over a period of eight and a half years, AREDS researchers recruited almost 3,600 study participants. On average, the subjects were tracked for 6.3 years, with vision exams every six months. All of the participants were between the ages of 55 and 80, and approximately equal numbers of women and men.

Subjects were divided into categories depending on the state of their vision when recruited. For example: "Category 4" patients already had AMD at the beginning of the study, while "Category 2" patients showed only borderline AMD characteristics. Subjects in all categories were randomly assigned one of the following four regimens:

* Daily supplementation with antioxidants (500 mg vitamin C, 400 IUs of vitamin E, 15 mg beta carotene) [Nature's Sunshine has a few products that are or have antioxydants that are particularly helpful for age related eye disease – Perfect Eyes Stock #4075-0, Bilberry Fruit Concentrate Stock #74-8, Lutein Stock #1855-6]

* Daily supplementation with zinc (80 mg of zinc oxide)
* Daily supplementation with a combination of both antioxidants and zinc at the prescribed dosages
* Placebo

After compiling the completed data in April 2001, researchers found that when compared to the placebo group, subjects in the antioxidant group had a 17 percent lower rate of AMD, and subjects in the zinc group had an impressive 21 percent lower incidence of AMD. But those in the group that combined antioxidants and zinc cut their risk of AMD by a full 25 percent.

The study didn't assess the supplements' ability to prevent the initial development of AMD, but there are indications that it could help prevent the disease.

The most recent round of research using AREDS data comes from a team at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine here in Baltimore.

Applying the 2001 results to estimates of those in the U.S. who are at risk of AMD, the Hopkins researchers concluded that over the next 5 years, well over a million people will develop advanced AMD if they receive no preventive treatment. But if all 8 million at risk began to take supplements comparable to those in the AREDS study, more than 300,000 of them would prevent the onset of AMD and the vision loss associated with AMD.

In what has to be considered a remarkable mainstream endorsement of the preventive effects of supplements, the authors of the study told Reuters news service that the intake of these vitamins and nutrients by people at risk of AMD should have "a major impact on them, as well as on the public health."

But who exactly is at risk of AMD?

As the name of the disorder implies, age is the primary risk factor, with people over the age of 60 being in the greatest danger. Other risk factors include cigarette smoking and a history of immediate family members with AMD. Prescription blood pressure drugs called ACE inhibitors actually create a greater AMD risk than smoking does. Finally, women are also at somewhat more risk than men.

All of the supplements used in the AREDS study are very safe at the dosage levels listed above. As always, you should talk to your doctor before starting any supplementation program, but for most people, the combination of antioxidants and zinc is an easy, relatively inexpensive way to fight off AMD and retain your sight.

And this is especially so if you're also getting a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. [Omega 3 EPA Stock #1609-9]

Another study that examined the dietary information of more than 4,500 AREDS subjects, aged 60-80 years. When researchers analyzed the results of omega-3 fatty acid consumption through fish intake on subjects at risk of AMD, they found that those who ate one or more servings of fish each week (four ounces of tuna, or the same amount of broiled or baked fish) reduced their chances of developing "wet AMD" (the most damaging type of AMD) by about one-third, while subjects who consumed more than two weekly fish servings cut their chances of wet AMD in half. [If you are concerned about eating fish because of the ocean pollution issue, take superior quality Nature's Sunshine's Omega 3 EPA]

[Once again, we see the mainstream finally catching up to what Nature's Sunshine members have known for some time.]
