Salty Food Cravings

What does a craving for salty foods mean? I would suspect a high potassium level causes it. Several people have asked me because they get a salty food craving just before bedtime, and that's not the time to dig into the potato chips. You cant eat just one... What do other food cravings mean? Like chocolate, sugar, spicy foods, fatty foods? -Leila North

Since the kidney's will trade potassium at all costs before it gives up the salt, it might be they have excessive sweating, or they just might need salt. We do need a certain amount of salt in our diets. If this is what is happening, have them take a pinch of sea salt in a glass of warm water in the morning and see if the cravings are still happening at night. If they do not crave, then salt is just what they needed. -Suzanne
