Hemochromatosis

I just signed up a man yesterday with this blood disease. Any idea of what can be taken to CORRECT? -Georgiana

This is a chronic disease where there are excessive deposits of iron in the body, most often in the liver often causing cirrhosis. Sometimes stores in the skin, benign, or in the pancreas causing diabetes mellitus. The easiest correction is to donate blood. The natural way would be to treat the liver and bone marrow. For sure use bentonite. -Eliezer Ben-Joseph N.D.

I have a client that was badly burned in a fire. She was in a coma for a couple of months with a tracheotomy, her lungs were very charred. She actually died! Miraculously she is alive with no scars from the severe burns. When they gave her a blood transfusion, she got Hemochromatosis, a dreaded condition of the body not being able to tolerate any iron. Does anyone have any info on this condition? She also was unable to speak because of her vocal cords being paralyzed. She can speak now but very strained. I would like to help her in both areas but every herb I think of contains iron. Any suggestions? She is also starting menopause.-Liz

Sometimes with surgery people get blood poisoning too. Try a blood purifier like BP-X. -Julie

We have Super Supplemental that doesn't include Iron. Perhaps she could use that. -Terri

Q: I need information on what helps support hemochromotosis. If anyone has any information or experience with this terrible disease I would appreciate hearing from them. We can offer support for the organs & the cardiac, pancreas & pituitary! But is there anything for the iron buildup that is so damaging especially to the liver causing cirrhosis and hemochromotosis? -mrsb

Start with BP-C, the combination which is to be recommended for too much or too little of anything in the blood. Dr. Jack recommended lots of Chlorophyll to go with that, a natural iron to pull out the inorganic iron when I worked with a lady with this. We had excellent results. -Ginny

For this problem, you will need Zinc, Copper and B12. Test regularly for the amounts. Two may test at a high amount. These will balance out the iron problem. -Valerie Steiner

This is usually referred to as hemochromotosis. It is the body recording the high amounts of inorganic iron taken up in the body. The best way to dump the inorganic is to put in organic. Try the I-X formula and add Alfalfa and Vitamin C to help the body process it. The body will take up what it has at hand even if it isn't the best choice.-Kimberly Balas

My husband has been diagnosed with too much iron in the liver and also a fatty liver. This all was decided with major blood work and an ultrasound after his liver enzymes were elevated during a routine blood test. He is on an ace inhibitor which is called Altace for high blood pressure. Dr. told him that this problem is not from the meds!!! He never had this before the meds. They have just told him to come back in 4 months and to also loose some weight and not drink alcohol. I have done a lot of reading and such and know that he needs to do something or this high iron can lead to cirrhosis. He has made some lifestyle changes and I have purchased Colostrum Plus which has the IP-6 in it. I was told that these 2 products can possibly remove excess iron from the body. I also purchased the Milk Thistle time release. He is not big on taking too many supplements so I would appreciate any recommendations for this problem. Am I going in the right direction and is there something else I can mention for him to do. -Kris

According to Nutritionist Gary Null, in his book The Complete Guide to Health and nutrition, Vitamins C, and E, B-Complex, and Zinc all can help lower iron levels, and or, protect against the harmful effects of high iron. Since your husband has HBP it would make sense that he may need more C, and E. And I have never met a man that wasn't in need of extra zinc (prostrate health). If he has a long history of stress it is likely he is low on B-Complex as well. For the fatty liver, I use Lecithin at 9 per day, along with some Bowel Detox. -Valerie Greguir

I have a blood disorder called hemochromotosis. This is also too much iron (inorganic) in the blood and can settle in the joints or harm major organs. I have handled my problem with this thought: I have heard that organic iron will flush the inorganic iron out of the body. I took I-X, Blood Build, Chlorophyll, and supported the organs that were weak and needed nutrition. In just 2.5 months my iron level was at the level that could have been achieved in 6 mos to 3 years with bloodletting. I myself was too weak for that. I still muscle test strong for the organic iron supplements from time to time. Hope this helps. Kathleen

The name of the condition is called hemochromatosis-or iron overload. www.hemochromatosis.org -Nora Weigl

Hemochromatosis is the hereditary version of high iron. Hemosiderosis in the non-hereditary form and actually occurs in 1 in every 150 people. To verify if this is actually what it is then you have to look at ALT, AST and GGTP liver enzymes. if these are increased then you have a positive. Liver issues like detox ability, congestion should be looked at. Bacterial infection or viral (if >WBC and <Lymphocytes) is usually present when this occurs as well. This can come from drinking tap water, iron cookware and mercury binding the iron in the liver. Usually B-12 and copper will help balance this along with SF. Some other factors to look at are serum ferritin and TIBC. -Kimberly Balas

I would throw out all cast iron skillets or any other utensils that are not stainless steel. We use I-X, the herbal form of iron to push out the inorganic iron in the system. Are they taking any non-herbal forms of iron? -Lisa Ayala

Does anyone know how to "fix" genetic hemochromatosis? And please don't tell me I-X or Yellow Dock because I tried the Yellow Dock which shot up my iron level creating another needed blood letting. Your replies will be greatly appreciated. -Huntdixie

Take 15 Target Endurance daily and just keep going and going and going. Also start with 10 Zinc, 4 B12, and 10 copper [or more depending on the brand of this.] Do test yourself every 5 days for a start but do not cut down on the Target Endurance. I had a 61 year old lady today, her body is that of an 80 year old but is improving. She started on the herbs 9 months ago, I was doing well, then a $1,500 medical insurance had to be paid so she cut right down, taking mainly Targets TS II, P14 and Endurance as the mainstays. Her voice is much improved and she does not walk so bent over as if she was 90 odd. She is just so much improved. You may need to keep Endurance going for 15 months at the same dosage.. But it is just a wonderful combination! For ALL -Valerie Steiner

My daughter was diagnosed with hemochromatosis at the age of 22 when her iron count came back 3x normal - almost 400. (This is the residual iron in the liver, not the hematocrit). We did a lot of research, and started to do a liver cleanse (Milk Thistle, Enviro Detox), detox baths with Helichrysum, a mini rebounder, etc. Seven months later, when she was re-tested, her iron count was normal, and has stayed normal. The specialist had never seen this condition "undone" without blood letting. He said that many people of European descent have genetically sluggish livers, and told us to continue everything we were doing. He wrote out the entire program for his reference. Hope this helps! My daughter has been doing great ever since. You definitely do not want to take ANY iron products - you are trying to pull the excess iron OUT of your system, not increase your iron levels! -Sharon Grimes

As a Master Herbalist, there is at least one thing I KNOW. When the body has TOO MUCH IRON...the BEST way to reduce the level to normal is to put in the NATURAL source, I-X, or Chlorophyll. In my 5 years of experience, the I-X has never been harmful, and has ALWAYS brought the iron level down to normal. I've been taught that the body holds on to the unnatural type, meaning other than the herbal source....until it can get the real thing. When the natural form is ingested, the body will let go of the other one and release it from the body. Of course, for a short time, it may show up in the body...as a reversal. Minerals in the leaf form are in such a small molecular form that the body CAN utilize it...and the body throw off the excess, without harm. Sorry to disagree, just in putting my experience. -JS

I use to have these headaches until I discovered by accident that I have Hemochromatosis (overload of iron). According to the statistic, one in ten Americans have hemochromatosis and it is masked by another disease. It does not always show up in the Iron blood count (mine iron count was normal), however, one has to ask their doctor to run a Ferratin, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) and Transferrin Saturation (TS) blood test. And, believe it or not, a lot of doctors will look at you like you are nuts and tell you, "YOU DON'T NEED TO HAVE THAT DONE BECAUSE YOUR IRON IS JUST FINE" which is what they told me. Guess what, they were wrong - not only did I have hemochromatosis but I had the genetic hemochromatosis - the other one is environmental hemochromatosis which can be cured. The only time my headaches come back is when my Iron or Ferratin gets too high. There is a wonderful website on this disease: http://www.genetichealth.com/Hemochromatosis_Home.shtml -Huntdixie

This woman's only hope is to find out what's triggered the migraines. She's on the road to nowhere fast. Could be many things; her cycle changes, adrenals, low blood sugar, something she's eating and shouldn't be, not drinking enough water. The drugs are not going to find the cause only create a need for more powerful ones. She should be working with someone closely that can monitor her diet and program. -Chottsie

I was told by a brilliant Pathologist who taught at a University that Hemochromatosis is caused by a weakness in the colon whereby the villi absorbs too much iron. And the only reason I believe him is not because he is a PhD but because he believes that medical doctors who practice medicine do not know what they are talking about. SO I am doing the Sludge drink minus the Ascorbic Acid (because it causes the body to absorb iron) and the Proactazyme and Colostrum (at different times) in between meals. I will keep you all posted on my progress. If anyone has any other thoughts to add to this, I am all eyes. -Huntdixie

Hemochromatosis is the body taking up too much inorganic iron. I use the I-X formula to have the body take up the organic and force it to dump the inorganic. CoQ10 and also Milk Thistle are good here. The key is to look at why the body is out of balance. It is mineral deficient. -Kimberly Balas

I have always been told that hemochromatosis is a problem with the body having too much inorganic iron. I don't know how the body would make iron, but I could be wrong there. When you take in the correct form, since the body always seeks to improve itself, it will replace the inorganic with the organic. I know this is not the whole answer you need, but maybe it will help to explain why someone with hemochromatosis would need I-X. -Patty Shipley

For IRON overload our sponsor had him take the ever famous MILK THISTLE and we added as per "Dr. Julian Whittaker" L-Glutathione. They thought he had the hereditary disease that caused the HIGH IRON but after every test imaginable and a liver biopsy and numerous meetings with the top LIVER SPECIALIST at MAYO CLINIC we found the following information: Excess IRON may be caused by a diseased liver that is not able to function properly and a liver biopsy determines this, while blood tests can tell if the herudatry Hemochromatosis is the cause or not- a liver biopsy determines the actual condition of the liver. Hope this helps someone else out too. -Joan Leslie Biggs

This could be hemochromatosis, which can be quite dangerous. Contrary to holistic beliefs, this is not inorganic iron which can be removed by taking organic iron. That can be DEADLY!!!!! I have seen this mentioned on the forum in the past and it is not true. These people cannot even take Skeletal Strength because it contains iron, and yet they lack calcium. You need to check the herbs and see which ones are high in calcium. Nutritional herbology is one good book to have on hand for this. They can become almost crippled from this disease once it gets worse. It is a genetic condition and thus I am using things to change RNA/DNA like Colostrum. They can take Coral Calcium, Cal/Mag and need LOTS of enzymes. -Inge Wetzel N.D.

I have clinical experience on this working hand in hand with an MD where the organic iron did work. The key component while using I-X was that we made sure that the oxidation of fatty acids were occurring to allow the minerals to be pulled through the intestinal membrane. So EFA's, Calcium and Small Intestine Detox on an empty stomach were also part of the program. This will also require B12 for the bile salts to oxidize fat which is an antioxidant and bring the two together. There can also be increased destruction of red blood cells in this stage so the essential oils in a massage will help to prevent that. Especially sandalwood and helichrysum. You also need to look at why iron levels are high in the first place. Usually there is an excessively toxic condition due to microorganism byproducts. This indicates increased use for fat specificity which is polarized by the sex organs. These are involved in the final stage of fat (cholesterol) metabolism. Fat is stored and aged in the spleen until the sex organs demand the cholesterol for hormonal productions. So when the spleen enters a passive stage it can affect this whole process and put stress on the liver. The Para Cleanse is something to consider as well. -Kimberly Balas

It is interesting that 1 out of every 150 people in the US will inherit either one or two genes for this disease. Here is some info on what to look for and how to manage it; Iron is essential to energy production but in the free state it is such a strong oxidant catalyst that to protect the body from its negative effect it must be bound as soon as it is absorbed. Such is the role of trasferrin protein and or ferritin which accounts for the bulk of all iron not incorporated into heme or hemoglobin. When the body is in balance ferritin is about 65-75% saturated with iron. As the body's burden of iron rises there is a rise in saturation to above 90% accompanied by a loss of the protective effect of the protein involved. Thus, excessive ferritin becomes a source of free radical oxidation. To compound this, when the body gets overacidic it will produce more free radical activity. These are all indicators of oxidative stress and connective tissue breakdown. The ferritin X 10 will equl the iron stores in mg. If they are 850-1720 then there is a high risk. Above 1730 is a very high risk. This excessive iron storage can lead to a wide range of degenerative conditions one of them being diabetes. The reason is that there is cell stress. this is a dysfunction of plasma cell membranes not allowing passage of nutrients into the cell and no fuction as a passage for wastes to exit either. So the cells become insulin resistant. Lymph Drainage formula can help some here. If there is respiratory stress involved as well, then look at the ferritin numbers. This number can also be driven high by an underlying root cause of acute bacterial infection, rheumatoid arthritis, IBS, liver disease and cancer. To determine the true toxicity of the iron subtract the TIBC from the serum iron number. This gives the estimation of toxicity levels. If the iron is greater than TIBC, then significant free iron is present and causing a high level of oxidative stress.. This is an indication that unbound iron is getting deposited in the hepatic cells of the liver. The liver enzyme levels will increase in this case as well. TIBC should be higher or equal to the serum iron. Protein is the primary protector against the negative effect of iron overload and also serves to insure better delivery of iron. Make sure the proteins are available by taking Protease Plus between meals. Chlorophyll capsules will help with the ferritin binding ability. Collatrim will help to strengthen the cages that hold the iron in the geodesic spheres composed of 24 apoferritin subunits. It will also go to work on the underlying chronic inflammation factor. Adding IF-C wouldn't hurt either. Antioxidants are a must in this situation so I would not only look at doing the Green Tea extract of about 4-6 capsules per day but also adding the HP Grapine as well. Another key factor to look at is heavy metal toxicity. When ferritin is high then there can be mercury present in the cells. Many that have had vaccines later in life will experience this. An elevation of ferritin and iron storage is an good indication of mercury and other heavy metals in the cells. The Heavy Metal Detox will help slow the inflammatory response and restore cell membrane function. Iron will rise during this period of being flushed. Protein intake must be increased during this phase to provide additional protection from the release of stored iron. Total bilirubin will also rise. There may be symptoms like a headache, sensitivity to sulphur (which will pass). Add Vitamin E 400 iu 2X per day. Use the Mega Chel program following the heavy metal detox. Some things to avoid are glutathione (n-acetyl-cysteine) garlic, eggs and vitamin C. -Kimberly Balas

The reason that this causes Diabetes is because the excess iron in the system pools in your organs. The Pancreas being one of them. The Iron overload then does damage to the organs, and if it's the Pancreas, diabetes can then result. -Mike

Dr. Rodier teaches in his class on Syndrome X that excess storage of iron in the liver is the result of diabetes, not the cause of diabetes. When someone has a high stored iron count, and genetic testing shows that it is NOT hemachromatosis, the person should be tested for diabetes. Excess stores of iron are a red flag for a pre-diabetic condition. -Sharon Grimes

I have a client who has this.....meaning that he has too much iron in his body. He also has neuropathy and is not a diabetic. I have started some essential oils for his feet and they are working to ease the discomfort in the nerves of his feet. Has anyone ever worked with a person with these two situations or even one of them? I am desperate here for some good knowledgeable help. I did do some muscle testing on him and sodium is low, fats are not being broke down and also proteins. I did his chemical toxicity points and his showed that he is strong with toxicity. I am having him work on cutting out coffee and we are doing some diet changes. -Merry

In ALL of the cases of people I have had with this (4) they all are taking up inorganic iron. I put all of them on I-X so they would dump the inorganic and take up organic iron in health amounts. I just don't tell them if they aren't real hip to the idea of herbs yet that this is an iron formula. Iron levels WILL show up high when the body is excessively toxic. This can be from micro organism by-products. This indicates increased use for fat specificity polarized via gonads. They really need Vitamin E to handle this. I also use the Chinese Spleen Activator, also check Chinese Blood Build (just use one or the other). SAM-e helps with liver function here and also essential oil of Helichrysum rubbed over the liver area. You have to get the "avoid" foods out of the diet for their blood type. This causes the red blood cells to be viscous if they continue these and the oxygen is hindered so the red blood cells die off early. Use the HP Grapine to help here too. The gonads are responsible for preparation of fats and how they are to be used. This results in a transfer of energy to atp which involves the mitochondrial inner membranes which contain iron containing proteins, cytochromes. Iron aids in toxic residue removal and phagacytosis. The spleen plays a part of balancing the oxidant iron with the anti-oxidant fat to either stimulate hemopoitec centers for the rbc or wbc production. When iron is too high in the blood there may be excessive toxic residue due to micro-organism byproducts. This requires more fat than is being mtabolized in the gonadal system. To be prepared to handle this is why I sometimes use L-Carnitine also. -Kimberly Balas

This condition is caused by cells in the lining of the small intestines that have an increased ability to absorb iron. This condition is in most cases hereditary and the cause has not for sure been determined. Increased levels of iron are then deposited in the nerve tissues, which is the cause of the neuropathy. Micro organisms actually take up iron and would thus reduce the iron levels in the blood. The chemical nucleus from cholesterol is the basis of all hormones. When there is an increase in iron, there also is an increase in oxygen. The high levels of iron causes in increase in red blood cells in relationship to the blood plasma and causes the blood to thicken. Yes, red blood cells are destroyed, but only due to the fact that there are too many, and they get squeezed through the capillary beds and so are damaged. Since the original problem is caused in the gut wall, I would use large amounts of Colostrum. I have worked w/ this case and this was one case where the I-X did not work. Her iron went higher. -Inge Wetzel
