Ten Places You Never Thought To Leave Your Business Card

Business cards can be one of the least expensive and most effective tools to advertising your business or services. You already know about handing them out when you cold call or attend networking meetings. However, you may be missing other opportunities to spread your message on a regular basis.

First make sure your business card contains all your pertinent information (company name, your name, address, phone numbers, e-mail and website). If your company name does not expressly state what your business is, include a line to explain it (foreign motor sales, financial planner, house painter, etc.).

Working on the theory you never know where a lead will come from, here are ten places you never thought to leave a card. Some of your cards may be thrown away, but a single new sale will more than make up for the wasted cards.

1. Restaurants:
Whenever you leave a tip, leave a card. This works especially well if you are a generous tipper. By the same token, if you have had a good experience at a restaurant, drop a brief note to the management on your letterhead and include your card. There's nothing like a sincere compliment to put you in a favorable light with the recipient.

2. Repair shop, dry cleaner, pharmacy, etc.
If the occasion arises when you're out running errands, and you have to spell your name, leave a card.

3. Banks:
You probably do your banking regularly. Whether you are making a deposit or withdrawal, include a business card with your paperwork.

4. Rental Cars:
Do you travel for business or pleasure and rent cars? If your customers come from all around, place a business card in your rental's console compartment. Most rental centers forget to clean that area, but most drivers will check it when they rent the car.

5. Doctor's office:
Your doctor and dentist know some of the most intimate areas of your body and life, but chances are, they may not know exactly what you do for a living. The next time you have an office visit, as you're leaving, hand your doctor a card saying, "You always help me. Perhaps sometime I can return the favor."

6. Paying bills:
When you enclose your check when paying a bill, include a business card. You never know who is processing your payment.

7. Suppliers:
You are always buying supplies for your business, but when was the last time you left a card with your order? Give your business card, and suggest they pass it along to one of their other customers who might benefit from your service. If a sale arises out of it, you'll be happy to send a referral fee. After all, these vendors have a vested interest in your business succeeding.

8. Clergy:
Clergy members often greet members of their congregation after services. Make sure your minister, priest or rabbi is familiar with your company. You can't ask for a better reference. In fact, your house of worship might benefit from your company as well.

9. Hair stylist:
You sit in your stylist's chair for a half-hour or more every four to six weeks. Usually, you find yourself chattering about local events and family happenings. The next time you have an appointment be sure to discuss your business. This time too, when you leave a tip, leave your card. Mention to your stylist you'll be happy to give a finder's fee for any new business leads they generate.

10. Library book:
If you frequently borrow books from your library, especially books that relate to business include a business card tucked into the pages. Who knows who will borrow the book next?
