Become a Presentation Pro – The Top 10 Tips for Presenters

1) Remember your audience.
Before you design a presentation, consider who will be hearing the information. Why have they come? Keep the audience's interests in mind and design a presentation that will serve them. They should leave having their expectations fulfilled.

2) Begin with a purpose.
Know if your goal is to inform, to persuade or to instruct. Think of the results you are trying to achieve and then work backwards to meet the results.

3) Use the rule of "3."
As you get organized, use the rule of "3." That is: don't make more than 3 points in one presentation; don't have more than 3 bullet points on any visuals; and use 3 examples to support each idea you present.

4) Use the right format.
Now that you have identified your goals, select a format for your presentation. There are 3 formats to choose from: direct, logical and sequential. Direct is where all the key detail is given prior to the supporting materials. Logical is where you give explanations and then lead to the conclusion. Sequential is chronological and the audience makes their own conclusions based on your material.

5) Select the best visual materials.
Visual aids complete a presentation and keep the audience interested. You can select from charts, graphs, and time lines for your visuals.

6) Practice with visuals.
When used properly, visuals will enhance your credibility and professionalism. They can also be a distraction. Practice coordinating your visuals with your talk and be sure they are adding value to the information. A speaker who has no idea how to operate the slide projector or other visual, will strike out.

7) Make first impressions in print.
When preparing hand-outs remember that packaging is very important. First impressions are critical and can help to sell you.

8) Select the correct visuals.
With so many choices, how do you know when to use an overhead, or opaque projector, or LCD, or slide projector, or VCR? The correct rule of thumb is to let the size of the audience be your guide. The furthest person from you should be no more than six times the width of the image you are displaying and the nearest person should be no closer than two times the width of the image you are displaying.

9) Practice.
Rehearse. Practice in front of a mirror, into a tape recorder or a video camera. Or, ask a friend or co-worker if you can present to them and have them provide feedback.

10) The fear factor.
Getting nervous is normal. Just breathe deeply. If you can exercise or meditate prior to the presentation. You can even memorize the first few lines to take the edge off. Then, look at your audience and embrace them.
