Baby - Spinal Bifida
I have a customer asking for a friend, her unborn baby has Spinal bifida and was wondering what could be done to help with this problem before the child is born. Thanks

If the baby is far enough along that the spina bifida was detected on ultra sound there is nothing that can be done with herbs to correct it. Her Obstetrician will probably opt for a c-section to avoid compressing the spinal tissue in the birth canal, and there will probably be immediate consultations with pediatricians and neurosurgeons, perhaps even in the delivery room. If the problem is very small, nothing further may need to be done. If it is larger, surgery may happen very quickly to try to close the spinal cord. It will be in the baby's best interest for the mother to be very well nourished both now and after the delivery. Now to ensure the baby is strong enough to withstand surgery; afterwards to ensure that her breast milk has the best nutrients to help the baby heal from the surgery. There are times we are ever so thankful to have modern medicine...and this is one of those times! -Judith Cobb |
