Bath Salts
I had mentioned to a fellow worker that I was making bath salts w/essential oils for Christmas gifts...he wanted to know if these could be used in a whirlpool bath...if so he would buy some for his wife. I am using Epsom Salt and some have Real salt.
Does anyone know how these would affect a whirlpool? Thanks for you help. -Lisa Seidl

Check with a manufacturer of the baths. If the salts are not ok, the essential oils by themselves will work. -Duane

Do be careful as to which oils you use if using them by themselves in a bath. Some oils are too strong and should never be used (e.g., Clove) and others need some type of carrier to diffuse them. An example of the latter is that you would never want to use a citrus oil in a bath by itself, it can burn mucus membranes (just think of what goes in the tub after your feet!). If you want to be really safe, the only oils that should be used by themselves would be Tea Tree and Lavender, the same oils that are the only ones that should be used neat. Of course, everyone is different and some people can use many of the oils neat but if giving as gifts it's better to be safe. -Mike, N.D.

Lavender is always safe and you can add 1/8th ounce per pound of salt or total of 8-10 drops per bath. I think what is needed to be said here is the quality of the essential oils. NSP is the finest so there is no worry with their lavender. Other good oils for the bath salts are singles such as Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Geranium (is the best), Rose, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang. If any citrus are used then only in a very small amount. An example would be only 3 drops per bath. So of your total 1/8 ounce of combination use only about 10 drops of citrus to the formula. Use Dead Sea Salts and cut 50/50 with Epsom salt. -Suzanne

It will depend on the jets in the tub. If they are plastic then the magnesium sulphate and the oil together could corrode the plastic. Oils are very abrasive on plastic. If they are metal then the best thing to use is the dead sea or lima salt with the oils. Just make sure you rinse them off after the bath. The Nature's Fresh is good for this. -Kimberly |
